About GearBuddy
We're a small independent research site dedicated to helping you build a healthier, more productive desk setup — without the marketing fluff.
What is GearBuddy?
GearBuddy is an independent, research-based guide site — not a store. We don't sell products, hold inventory, or manufacture anything. Our sole purpose is to help US shoppers navigate the crowded, often confusing market for ergonomic desk gear.
We focus on the US market and products that are readily available on Amazon, compiling specifications and public user reviews so you can make an informed decision before purchasing.
How we research
Transparency matters to us, so here's exactly how we build our guides:
Manufacturer specifications
We start with official product pages, spec sheets, and documentation released by manufacturers. This gives us an objective, verifiable baseline — dimensions, materials, sensor specs, battery life figures, switch ratings, charging wattages, and more. We cross-reference these across multiple sources where possible.
Amazon User Reviews
We evaluate publicly available Amazon reviews focusing on verified purchases. We look for patterns: recurring praise, recurring complaints, reports of long-term reliability or premature failure. A product with 4.5 stars from 10,000 reviews tells a very different story than one with 4.5 stars from 50 reviews.
Community Discussions & Forums
We monitor and research relevant communities including:
- r/MechanicalKeyboards — in-depth keyboard comparisons, switch discussions, and long-term ownership reports
- r/ErgoMechKeyboards — ergonomic keyboard layouts and split keyboard discussions
- r/buildapc — broad community feedback on peripherals and desk setups
- Other relevant subreddits for mice, monitors, and desk accessories
Community discussions often surface issues that don't appear in short-term reviews — build quality problems that emerge after months of use, compatibility quirks, firmware issues, and comparisons against competing products made by people who've owned both.
How we pick winners
When evaluating products for a guide, we apply a consistent set of criteria:
- Ergonomic Design Principles — Does the product's design align with established ergonomic guidelines? For mice, this means promoting a neutral wrist position. For keyboards, it means layout choices that reduce finger travel and wrist deviation. We use publicly available ergonomic research and guidelines as reference points.
- Build Quality Reputation — We assess long-term durability based on aggregated user reports. A product with consistent complaints about cable fraying, switch chatter, or premature failure won't make our top picks regardless of its spec sheet.
- Value for Money — We consider what you're getting relative to the price. A premium keyboard needs to offer meaningfully more than an entry-level alternative to earn a recommendation at that tier. We always try to include budget and premium options.
- User Satisfaction Signals — Overall review scores, ratio of positive to negative reviews, specific praise for features relevant to our criteria, and the quality and volume of community endorsements all factor into our assessment.
- Compatibility with Common Setups — We prioritize products that work well with standard desk configurations — Windows and macOS compatibility, standard connectivity options, easy setup, and minimal required software.
Price history and discount tracking methodology
A major tenet of our editorial guidelines is protecting shoppers from manufactured discounts and misleading "list price" inflation. We do not display dynamic or real-time prices on our pages to ensure compliance with Amazon Associates operating standards, but our product evaluation process incorporates rigorous price history verification:
- Baseline tracking: We monitor rolling 90-day and 180-day price trends across Amazon.com via independent price-history trackers like CamelCamelCamel to verify whether an advertised discount represents genuine value.
- MSRP sanity checks: Manufacturers occasionally elevate the strike-through "List Price" on Amazon right before major promotional periods like Prime Day or Black Friday. We cross-reference manufacturer direct store pricing to confirm actual historical selling averages.
- Value tier evaluation: We classify peripherals into entry-level, midrange, and premium tiers based on consistent historical pricing brackets rather than temporary flash-sale anomalies.
Affiliate Disclosure
GearBuddy participates in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program. When you click a link on GearBuddy that leads to Amazon and you make a purchase, we earn a small commission. This comes at no additional cost to you — the price you pay is exactly the same whether or not you arrived via our link.
These commissions help cover the costs of running GearBuddy — hosting, tools, and the time spent researching guides. Without them, we couldn't provide this content for free.
Our affiliate relationships do not influence which products we feature or how we rank them. We aim to recommend what's genuinely best for you based on our research criteria. We will never recommend a product solely because it pays a higher commission. For our full disclosure, see the Affiliate Disclosure section of our Legal page.
